Random thoughts for those on the edge:
1. It is meant to be fun and accessible to just about everyone.
2. It should not take up all of your time at Con
3. It costs you nothing (although the contest costs quite a bit to put together)
4. Prequalifications are currently active?
The mystery challenge is just that- a mystery. Details of the contest are not given until the contest starts.
So take the dare, and enter a contest where you are flying blind.
So you heard about the challenge, and think you can compete?
Search for hints and clues carefully, even prior to Defcon.
Suggested Skillset for success:
-Physical security (Lockpicking, literal hacking, etc)
-Electronics (reading schematics, breadboard prototyping, etc)
-Puzzle and Riddle Skills
-Coding, networking, hacking...
-???
